True Book Fair

What is the TRUE Book Fair?

The TRUE Book Fair is a celebration of our love books and reading. It is an annual event in which each Talley student gets to choose 2 books to keep completely free of cost!

The titles available at the TRUE Book Fair center diverse experiences. We have a wide range of books available across all genres and formats. Books support upper elementary readers at all of their learning levels.

Why change up the traditional book fair? Wasn't it going well before?

It was! Traditional book fairs were a HUGE fundraiser for our library.

Unfortunately, traditional book fairs do not align with our library's mission and values. They highlight inequities among our students, as only those whose parents have the means to do so can purchase books. In the past we have provided book coupons for students who can not purchase books. However, this separates students into categories based on financial need, and accurately determining need is incredibly challenging. Not only that, but the fair also shuts down the library, which severely limits operations of the space whose core mission is to provide equitable access to resources for all students.

How did you get this idea?

The concept of the #TrueBookFAIR was pioneered by Julie Stivers, a media specialist in North Carolina. You can read more about her here

How do you fund this?

This year's fair was generously supported by Talley's PTO!

Funding for library programming traditionally acquired through book fairs was supplemented by in-store events at Little Shop of Stories, as well as books purchased through author visits.

How can I support this initiative?

Please contact Ashley Long (along@csdecatur.net). She can provide more details on how to provide financial support for the Talley library's initiatives.
